Technology Studio
We’re proud to introduce the Technology Studio at the Halifax Society for the Blind — a dedicated space designed to support people with sight loss using the latest assistive technology.
Located at the rear of our building, just past the Sight Centre and café, the studio is open to members Monday to Friday, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Whether you’re looking for support with education, employment, reading, or day-to-day tasks, the studio provides a welcoming and accessible environment to explore a wide range of digital tools.
You can watch the virtual tour below to see the studio in action, or read on to learn more about the technology and equipment we have available.

Desktop Computers with JAWS and ZoomText
Our desktop setup features JAWS 2025, a leading screen reader that provides full voice and braille access for users with little or no vision. For those with low vision, ZoomText offers powerful screen magnification and visual enhancements, allowing for easy reading, writing, web browsing, and more.

Guide Connect on TV
A TV in the studio runs Dolphin Guide Connect, an easy-to-use interface designed for people with sight loss. It supports email, web browsing, audiobooks, video calling, and more. The system can be controlled using a mouse and keyboard, or a remote control, depending on what feels most comfortable.

Laptop with Dual Screen and Dolphin SuperNova
Our laptop is connected to a second, larger screen for improved visibility and multitasking. It runs Dolphin SuperNova, which includes screen reading, magnification, and braille support — ideal for a wide range of visual needs. The second screen can be used to extend the display or as a larger alternative to the laptop’s own screen.

OrCam 3 – Portable Text-to-Speech Tool
The OrCam 3, positioned on a stand and connected to the laptop, is a small, portable device that reads printed text aloud in real time. From letters and books to menus and signs, it provides a quick and simple way to access written information independently.

Synapptic Devices
We have a variety of Synapptic devices available to loan or buy. These accessible smartphones and tablets feature large text, clear menus, and simple navigation designed specifically for users with sight loss.

Chargers and Accessories
We keep a wide stock of chargers, plugs, and USB adaptors available, so members can stay connected and powered up when using the studio or their own devices.

CCTV Scanner
Our CCTV scanner magnifies printed documents and displays them on a screen. Users can adjust magnification, contrast, and colours to suit their preferences, making it easier to read letters, books, or paperwork.

Accessible Keyboards
To meet individual needs, we offer a variety of accessible keyboards, including models with larger keys, high-contrast lettering, and different tactile layouts. These can be easily swapped in to provide a more comfortable and efficient experience.
